Tanty’s Cabinet, 2025

Overview

Tanty’s Cabinet draws on the memories embedded in found objects to honour ancestral stories. Expanding beyond the artist's typical use of vintage wallpaper in her figurative painting, these works incorporates bamboo souvenir trays and ornaments, items once proudly displayed in the living rooms of West Indian homes.

These kitsch treasures, reminders of both heritage and longing, become acts of atonement for enslaved ancestors whose blood was shed to create landscapes now consumed as tourist destinations. Through them, the anonymous are made visible, their lives reclaimed as worthy of reverence and respect.

Works were exhibited at the artist’s solo exhibition collaboration with The Lemonseed Project.
