The Black Muses, ….

Overview

The Black Muses reimagines the Ancient Greek Muses through a Caribbean lens, centring Black British women as keepers of memory and culture. Set against rich backgrounds, these works glow with colour, remembrance, text and silver crowns of wisdom and heritage.

Instead of song or poetry, the muses offer sustenance, from hardough bread and soca music to Carnival Mas costumes and the names of enslaved Jamaican women. Text woven into the works introduce fragments of the artist’s Black British Caribbean girlhood, transforming personal memory into collective history. Throughout the everyday is elevated into legend, affirming the lives and stories of Black women as visible, respected and enduring.

Works have been selected for groups shows with Wilkie Farr & Gallagher, Rogue Manchester and Copeland Park.
